Trinity Receives Gift for Students Interested in Health Professions
Doctor who has helped develop treatments for children
with HIV/AIDS makes contribution
Trinity University has received a $50,000 gift to support undergraduate students interested in studying
for a career in health professions and to support a bilingual peer tutor
program in the sciences. The funds were given by Dr. Mark W. Kline ’79, chair
of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and physician-in-chief at Texas
Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kline, a pioneer in the treatment of children with
HIV/AIDS, made the gift in honor of his parents, William and Elsie Kline. The
contribution was part of the University’s comprehensive Campaign, Dream.
Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University
The gift will support
students interested in medicine conduct biomedical research during the summer
at Trinity. The funds will cover a stipend, research materials, and travel to
scientific conferences.
The funds will also go to
a new peer tutoring program in the sciences called Tutor Compañero de Ciencia. The
program will support the training of upper class students to help first-year
Latino students as they begin pre-med coursework. In addition, the gift will
help with the creation of an anatomy course to be taught in Spanish targeting
first-year Latino students as well as students interested in receiving an
introduction into medical Spanish.
Dr. Kline has helped
develop clinical therapies that have increased the quality of life for children
with the HIV/ AIDS viruses. He has directed an ambitious program for health
professional education and training programs for 20 African countries, Mexico, Romania, Ukraine, and China.
He received a
bachelor’s degree in biology summa cum laude from Trinity in 1979 and an M.D.
with honors from Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Kline was
recognized as one of Trinity’s Distinguished Alumni in 2008.

in Trinity’s history. With a goal of $200 million, the campaign assists Trinity

innovative new academic programs that capitalize on Trinity’s strengths and
meets the demands of the global society in which students must thrive. The
Campaign concluded in September 2009 after exceeding its goal with a total of
$205,953,000.
