Teaching Abroad

In a study she presented about "Texas Teachers Teaching Abroad," Dr. Eloise Hughes of Houston Baptist University provided the links below to candidates considering teaching overseas. Individual employers may require students to submit an application, complete a minimum years of teaching service at an accredited school, or pay administrative fees. Current MAT students considering a career abroad should visit the office of off-campus study to discuss visa requirements and begin preparations for working in another country as soon as possible as it may take several months to complete this process.

In addition to the links below, Dr. Hughes recommended David C. Pollack's book, Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Between Worlds (Nicholas Brealey Publishing 2003) for all individuals preparing to teach in a school with an international population.

Candidates who are interested in teaching abroad may attend the annual international fair for educators at the University of Northern Iowa (Waterloo, Iowa). In February 2008, the UNI fair anticipates over 200 recruiters representing more than 120 schools worldwide. Attending the UNI Fair gives candidates the opportunity to network, interview, and possibly sign a contract with a K-12 international school.
