Watching Movies

Trinity has a large collection of films on DVD and VHS, including almost of the DVDs produced by the Criterion Collection.  You can find the Media Collection on the third floor of the Library.  For information on searching for films in the collection, click HERE.

The AT&T Center for Learning and Technology includes a number of resources for studying film and other media.  The CLT also operates TriniTV, which allows students to watch assigned films on their own computers.

If the film you want is not in Trinity's collection, you can request a copy from Interlibrary Loan.   The San Antonio Public Library's video collection includes a number of hard-to-find titles.  You can also look for the movie at a local video store.  The Hollywood Video at 6480 N. New Braunfels has a particularly good collection.

It is worth mentioning that many film scholars prefer to watch the movies they are studying on 35mm film.  To do so, they will often travel to archives around the country, such as the UCLA Film and Television Archive in Los Angeles, the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, or the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Obviously, such research is not practical for an undergraduate film class.  However, it can be a good idea to keep an eye open for 35mm film screenings in the area around San Antonio.  Watching a classic movie shown on film can give you a new understanding of its style and meaning.  For more information, see Places to See Film: San Antonio and Places to See Film: Austin.
