DETERMINING ELIGIBILITY

A student cannot receive financial aid at more than one institution during any given term. If attending more than one institution, please notify the Office of Financial Aid.

NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID

The process used to determine eligibility for financial aid is called need analysis. In need analysis, income and asset information from both the student and parents is used to help determine the family's ability to contribute to the cost of attendance. This figure is widely referred to as the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). If the cost of the education (cost of attendance) is greater than what your family is expected to contribute, then you have Financial Need, or eligibility for financial aid

   Cost of Attendance
- Expected Financial Contribution (EFC)
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
= Financial Need (Eligibility for Financial Aid)

In calculating the family's EFC for federal, state, and institutional aid, the following are examples of some of the factors that are taken into account to determine need:

  • parent's combined income
  • federal and state paid taxes
  • parent's asset holdings
  • size of the family
  • number of family members enrolled in college
  • student income and assets

The formula used to compute financial need is basically the same at all universities. Differences in need can vary among universities because of different need analysis philosophies/methodologies, as well as costs of each university. It is important to understand that need is relative to the college's total cost of attendance. Please keep in mind, since you will be awarded financial aid based on need and the availability of funds, your EFC may be more or less than your balance owed to the university. A family may qualify for aid at Trinity, but not at a less-expensive institution. Through financial aid, families with modest means can afford a Trinity education.

RENEWAL OF NEED-BASED AID

At Trinity, we are committed to continually assist students financially, provided that students file the required forms (for aid renewal) by the deadlines indicated and continue to demonstrate similar need, along with maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress.
