STUDY ABROAD
Application for Study Abroad Financial Aid
Students at Trinity University who are planning to study abroad may apply for financial assistance in the same manner as students studying on-campus by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Consult the Office of Financial Aid (FAO)
Contact the FAO as early as possible concerning policies governing financial aid for study abroad. It is critical that you stay in close communication with your financial aid counselor throughout the entire study abroad process.
Need-Based Aid
Trinity requires the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
How to Apply for Need-Based Aid
To be considered for need-based financial aid, you will need to file the FAFSA.
| Step 1: | Obtain the FAFSA online at the following website (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) or from the Office of Financial Aid. | |
| Step 2: | Due to limited availability of funds, submit the FAFSA to the federal processor as soon as possible after January 1, 2005. To ensure full consideration of financial assistance, submit the FAFSA by May 1, 2005. The Office of Financial Aid will receive the FAFSA results electronically when you include Trinity's code (003647). | |
| Step 3: | Sign and return Trinity’s Financial Aid Award within 3 weeks of the date on the award letter. Awards must be "accepted" in order for monies to be disbursed later. | |

Written Agreement/Contract
Your Study Abroad Counselor will complete a Written Agreement/Contract, required for the administration of federal aid, and submit it on your behalf for each program/institution to which you apply. Additional Financial Aid questions should be addressed directly to your Financial Aid Counselor..
Once You Have Been Accepted to The Program
A letter will be sent to your Host Institution from the Office of Financial Aid indicating the amount of aid that will transfer for your Study Abroad Program, along with the date your award monies will be remitted. Most study abroad/special studies programs will extend you credit for the amount of your Trinity-administered aid award and will await direct payment from Trinity. It is up to the student to confirm this with the Study Abroad program ahead of time. With the exception of the Brackenridge Scholarship, outside scholarships will not be reported unless the Financial Aid Office receives confirmation from you that your outside scholarship will be processed through Trinity.
Study Abroad/Special Studies Aid Refund
Trinity refunds will be issued no earlier than the 14th day after Trinity begins classes (i.e. February 1,2005 for the Spring 2005 semester) if your account is clear of any outstanding balance (fee, fine, etc.).
Power of Attorney
You may want to consider leaving a Power of Attorney with a family member to help you manage your financial needs during your Study Abroad semester. Please contact the Study Abroad Office for details on Power of Attorney.
Application for Study Abroad Financial Aid
Federal regulations may require us to verify the information that you and your parent(s) report on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you are selected for verification, you must submit signed copies of your and your parent's 2004 Federal Income Tax Return, W-2 forms, 1099, and any other requested documents. If you fail to comply with the verification process, you may become ineligible for federal, state, and Trinity University need-based awards. If there are differences between the data on the FAFSA and the tax returns, we may revise your awards to reflect the differences. You may request an IRS Form 4506 by callig the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-829-1040.
