Frequently Asked Questions about Study Abroad
Are there scholarships available to cover Study Abroad?
Some Host Institutions have scholarships available to partially cover Study Abroad. Please check with your Host Institution.
Can I use my Trinity scholarships to cover my Study Abroad?
Most Trinity Merit-based scholarships can be used for Study Abroad. Please refer to the list of approved/disapproved aid using the links above..
Will I receive the same amount of Financial Aid for Study Abroad?
No. Some funds cannot be used for Study Abroad. Please refer to the list of approved/disapproved aid using the links above.
Can I use a Plus Loan for Study Abroad?
Yes. Upon eligibility, a Plus Loan can be available for Study Abroad.
Can external scholarships be used for Study Abroad?
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the donor for approval.
What types of Financial Aid are available for Summer Study Abroad?
The only sources of Financial Aid that may be available for Summer Study Abroad are Loan Programs. Please contact the Study Abroad Office for information on possible scholarship programs. Summer Financial Aid is determined on the completion of the 2005-2006 FAFSA.
Can I get part of my Financial Aid early?
No. Your funds will not be released until 14 days after Trinity’s first official class day.
How will I receive my Financial Aid if I’m not on campus?
Student Accounts will generate a refund check that will be forwarded to your Host Institution on your behalf.
How will my documents be signed while I’m studying abroad?
If you are expecting paper checks (ie. Stafford loan or outside scholarship), please make arrangements for a “Limited Power of Attorney” to be left with your family or a trusted designated individual. This will also help with banking needs while abroad.
How many semesters am I allowed to use Trinity and Federal Aid for Study Abroad?
The maximum number of semesters is two.
What if my Study Abroad Program costs more than a semester at Trinity?
Trinity does not adjust their budget to compensate for Study Abroad costs. Additional costs are the sole responsibility of the student.
What is the first semester I may Study Abroad?
Typically your first Fall or Spring semester during your Junior year. However, there are exceptions. If you are interested in participating in Study Abroad, please contact the Study Abroad Office as soon as possible, as some programs allow students to Study Abroad as early as the Sophomore year.
What type of expenses might I be required to pay for up front?
You may incur deposit and transportation costs.
I have never qualified for need-based financial assistance, but I do hold a Trinity Academic scholarship. Will I lose my scholarship if I choose to Study Abroad?
No. Most academic scholarships may be used for Study Abroad.
Are there any special requirements for applying for need-based assistance for a study abroad/special studies semester(s)?
Students should check with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure that all required forms are on file prior to their departure.
If I or my family participate in the Academic Management Services (AMS) payment plan, will I be able to use this program for Study Abroad?
No. You must cancel your AMS with Trinity for the semester you participate in Study Abroad. Any balance already paid to Trinity University for the semester you plan to participate in a Study Abroad program can be refunded to you. If you are interested in using a payment plan for your Study Abroad program, please contact your Host Institution, as many of the Study Abroad institutions have their own payment plan programs.
What happens if I don’t have enough money to pay for the Study Abroad Program?
It is the student and their families responsibility to cover all and any additional expenses. Students may have to check into bank loans to cover expenses.
Can Tuition Exchange or Tuition Remission be used for Study Abroad?
Tuition Exchange and Tuition Remission CANNOT be used for Study Abroad. Please contact your Financial Aid Counselor for alternative financing options.
What happens if my Study Abroad Program charges exceed the cost of attendance at Trinity?
In some cases, Study Abroad charges may exceed the cost of attendance at Trinity. You are responsible for any additional charges not covered by financial aid. Your Study Abroad Counselor will help you determine if there are any additional charges.
Will my personal travel expenses be covered by financial aid?
Any aid that exceeds the Study Abroad program’s charges can be used for personal travel expenses.
