TUITION EXCHANGE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between tuition remission and tuition exchange?

Tuition Remission for Dependents - Dependent children of Trinity employees who attend Trinity are eligible to receive a tuition scholarship. Fees, room, board, and other expenses are not included.

Tuition Exchange – Dependent children of Trinity employees may apply as candidates for tuition exchange at Rice University and member institutions of Tuition Exchange, Inc., and selected schools among the Associated Colleges of the South. Fees, room, board, and other expenses are not included. Scholarships typically equal full tuition or a set tuition rate.

Who is eligible for these benefits?

Tuition Exchange - Full-time employees must complete four years at Trinity before they can receive tuition exchange benefits for their dependent children.

Tuition Remission for Dependents - Dependents must be admitted to Trinity and full-time employees must work two years to be eligible for 50% tuition remission and four years to be eligible for 100%.

Independent and graduate students are not eligible for tuition benefits.

What schools participate in tuition exchange with Trinity?

Trinity takes part in three tuition exchange programs:

  • The Tuition Exchange, Inc., or TEI, has 589 member institutions in 47 states, Washington D.C., and the United Kingdom. Go to www.tuitionexchange.org to see a list of schools.

  • Associated Colleges of the South, or ACS, includes 16 schools. All but Davidson participate in tuition exchange. Participating schools include Furman, Millsaps, Rhodes, Southwestern, University of Richmond, University of the South, and Washington and Lee. Unlike TEI, there is a fee to participate in this program. If the dependent is approved by a member institution, the family has to pay $1,500 and Trinity has to pay $1,500 to ACS. For more information, go to www.colleges.org.

  • Rice University and Trinity have a reciprocal tuition exchange agreement; if a Trinity dependent applies to Rice and is admitted, tuition exchange is automatic assuming the employee’s eligibility is verified.

If my child is admitted to a tuition exchange partner school, will they automatically get a scholarship?

TEI and ACS are competitive programs and not all students who are admitted to their partner schools will receive tuition exchange scholarships. Tuition exchange schools have limited offerings and often have higher tuition exchange scholarship requirements than they do for admission.

Students offered admission to Rice will automatically receive tuition exchange.

How do I apply for tuition remission and tuition exchange?

We recommend submitting tuition remission/exchange applications by December prior to the fall entry term to avoid missing any school deadlines.

The faculty or staff member should submit a Tuition Benefits Form, located on the Human Resources website, to Denise Covert in the Office of Human Resources. Be sure to mark tuition exchange for both fall and spring semesters.

The student or employee should submit a Tuition Export Form, located on the Financial Aid website, for each tuition exchange school to which the student is applying. Christina Pikla, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, will submit a tuition exchange application to each school indicated. Each school will determine whether the student is awarded a tuition exchange scholarship.
