St. Edward Mercy Health System is located in Fort Smith, Arkansas and, in the aggregate, has 400 staffed beds.  St. Edward Mercy is a member of the Sisters of Mercy Health System, the ninth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S., which reports total net revenues of over $3.5 billion and operates 18 acute care facilities.

 

St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, a 349-bed acute care facility, is the flagship hospital of the St. Edward Mercy Health System. The system also includes three critical access hospitals and St. Edward Mercy Physicians, a 60-physician multi-specialty group.  On an annualized basis, St. Edward Mercy Medical Center reports: 15,136 discharges; 45,000 ER visits; 2,500 deliveries; 300 open hearts; 100,000 out-patient registrations; 1.38 all payer CMI; and an average length of stay of 4.8 days.

 

Reporting to St. Edward Mercy Health System’s President/CEO, the COO serves as the second most accountable executive and a key member of the executive team, with responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, and monitoring day-to-day operations and providing leadership in operations improvement and productivity, supply chain, LOS, and expense management. Using data to drive change/improvement and assure accountability in the clinical and administrative decision-making process will be essential.   

 

Key measurements of success include: 1) pursuing a continuous quality- and service-oriented culture; 2) building effective partnerships with the diverse medical staff; 3) establishing and achieving performance goals for each department/service based on best practice for cost-effectiveness and high quality. S/he must be willing to make challenging decisions in continually enhancing the financial and operational performance. 

 

Requirements include a Master’s degree in health care or business administration or related field; a demonstrated track record of 5+ years of operations experience at progressively more responsible management levels; and extensive experience in clinical operations, cost and resource management, and customer service excellence. An entrepreneurial and data-driven orientation combined with sensitivity to customer service, and the ability to develop systems and processes which address quality, customer service, cost, and resource utilization management will be essential.  Mercy also seeks COO candidates with proven medical staff relationship building skills; a comfort level working within the context of a system; and a personal presence which is driven by honesty, integrity, and the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, goals, and values of the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Mercy Health System.
