Trinity Choir on Retreat 2008 |
The Trinity Choir is the oldest performing ensemble at Trinity and enjoys a national as well as international reputation of musical excellence. Comprised of about 60 singers of diverse backgrounds and majors from across the university, the Trinity Choir’s repertoire is equally wide-ranging as it encompasses sacred and secular works from the Renaissance era to the 21st century.
The Trinity Choir has performed at the inaugural conference of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) and at the Texas Music Educator’s Association Convention. Recent tours have included trips to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Romania, Yugoslavia, and throughout the United States. In addition, the choir performs regularly on campus and throughout the San Antonio metropolitan area.
The Chamber Singers is a dynamic performing ensemble comprised of approximately 24 voices. Each singer is a member of the Trinity Choir, from which they are drawn. This choir rehearses twice weekly and specializes in both early and contemporary music, providing a unique outlet for musical expression. The Chamber Singers give frequent performances on campus, throughout the community and on tour.
The University Women’s Chorus explores the vast breadth of music written to display the beauty and power of the female voice. This choir of women embodies the belief that the vocal art requires going beyond the singing of notes in order to create experiences that positively shape our world. Comprised of 40-50 singers, this ensemble is open to students from every academic discipline at the university.
The Trinity Choral Union is a massed chorus comprised of the combined Trinity University choral ensembles joined with talented singers from Trinity faculty, staff, and alumni (totaling over 120 singers). Each spring, the Choral Union joins forces with the Trinity Symphony Orchestra to perform a major choral/orchestral work.
Trinity Symphony Orchestra boasts an enrollment of over 50 musicians sampling the many different majors offered on campus. Performing a wide variety of repertoire from classical to contemporary allows the ensemble to feature soloists. During the spring semester, the Symphony Orchestra collaborates with the combined choirs for a large and concert called the Choral Union. Some previous selected Choral Union concerts have featured music from Brahms, Orff, Poulenc, and Ravel.
Trinity Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a 60-member group that performs works for winds and percussion, including traditional marches, representative works from the standard wind band repertoire, and contemporary works of distinction. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble has toured to England, Chicago, New Mexico, and throughout Texas.
Trinity Jazz Ensemble continues the tradition of Big-Band Jazz. The jazz ensemble consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section (piano, bass, drums and guitar) and performs traditional to contemporary arrangements of swing, bossa, ballad, samba, and rock.
Trinity University Handbell Ensemble performs on six octaves of Schulmerich Handbells and five octaves of Malmark Chimes. Recent performances have included a guest appearance with the San Antonio Symphony at their annual Holiday Pops concert and at the San Antonio Fiesta Coronation.
Other Ensembles include opera workshop, Flute Choir, Saxophone Quartet, and various small chamber groups. Performing roles are also available in Trinity musical productions and pit orchestra. Contact the Department of Music for more information.
