Dr. Diane Cummings Persellin, Professor of Music Education, teaches introductory and advanced courses in music education specializing in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade She also supervises music education internships during Trinity’s professional fifth-year program leading to the M.A.T. degree. During the summers she is the Director of Trinity’s Orff Schulwerk Certification Course and is on the staff of the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) Teaching and Learning Workshop for college professors.  She has been President of Texas Music Educators Conference, of Texas Coalition for Music Education, and Chair of the San Antonio Symphony Education Committee.  Dr. Persellin served as Acting Chair of the Trinity Music Department in 2001.

Currently, she is Editor of General Music Today, and on the editorial boards of Mountain Lake Reader, Teaching Music, and Texas Music Education Research.  She was a Guest Editor of a Special Focus Issue of Music Educators Journal, a member of the editorial board of Journal of Music Teacher Education, co-chair of the early childhood MENC SRIG, Chair of the TMEA Southwestern Musician Review Committee, and consultant for the Core Knowledge Foundation.

Her research has been published in numerous music education journals including Journal of Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, American Music Teacher, Chamber Music, Research Perspectives in Music Education, General Music Today, Kodaly Envoy, Early Childhood Connections, Teaching Music, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Overtones, and Texas Music Education Research.  She has co-authored the book Designing Environments for Young Children published by MENC and has written chapters for several others including “The Theories and Approaches Relevant to Teaching Young Children” in Musical Lives of Young Children  published by Prentice Hall. In 2002, her research team received the prestigious MENC research grant to fund their study on preschool music practices across the country.      

Dr. Persellin has presented music education workshops and papers nationally and internationally in such places as Japan, Korea, Thailand, South Africa, the West Indies, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Denmark, Spain, England, and Canada.  Honors include Who’s Who in America, Accomplished Music Educator of Texas (MENC), and induction into the San Antonio's Women’s Hall of Fame for her work with the Education programs of the San Antonio Symphony. Prior to joining the faculty at Trinity University, Dr. Persellin taught at Arizona State University, Mayville State College in North Dakota, the University of North Dakota, and in the Minneapolis area public schools.   

Dr. Diane Persellin is an active organist and conducts Trinity’s Parker Handbell Choir.
