Fat Talk Free Week

Dr. Carolyn Becker and student research assistants completed the initial development and
testing of Reflections: Body Image Program
in collaboration with the local sororities at Trinity University.
Since 2005, Dr. Becker also has partnered with the Delta Delta Delta Fraternity (i.e.,
Tri Delta) to translate what was learned at Trinity and expand the program nationally.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, Reflections will be implemented on 28 campuses across
the country.
Psychology department research assistants who are members of the local sororities at Trinity
continue to run their campus-based combined program/research study on a yearly basis with
Dr. Becker, thus making an ongoing contribution to our understanding of eating disorders
prevention and risk factor reduction and furthering knowledge about Reflections as a program.

How did Fat Talk Free Week come about?
|
Dr. Carolyn Becker, an associate professor of psychology at Trinity University, leveraged the unique organizational
structure of sororities to disseminate a groundbreaking peer-led eating disorders awareness program - with exciting results.
Tri Delta heard of the program and signed on in 2005 to pilot the program at 12 major universities.
With strong positive feedback from participants, Tri Delta is now launching the program, titled Reflections, nationwide.
In the process, Tri Delta recognized the prevalence and damaging effects of chasing the thin ideal and 'fat talk' on women of all ages,
and decided to start a major body activism movement for all women using the principles of Reflections - and Fat Talk Free Week was born.
