Thesis

Although all students majoring in Psychology at Trinity University receive research experience before they graduate, students who wish to have a research experience similar to graduate training may elect to write a thesis.
The experience provides a capstone for the student's four years at Trinity.
It also prepares students well for writing Master's Theses in some graduate programs.
A student considering the thesis option should make a strong commitment to having research-related activities dominate their schedule.
The topic of the thesis project is determined in conjunction with the thesis advisor, who is knowledgeable in the particular domain of the research and who will advise the student on each phase.
However, thesis students must be self-motivated and show strong initiative, because they are responsible for each phase of the research project: preparation of materials and design, data collection and analysis, and preparation of a manuscript that is written according to departmental specifications.
All thesis students present the hypothesis, design, and results of the study (studies) to the Psychology Faculty and students during the last semester of their senior year.
Bound copies of the theses are stored in our conference room and are available for check-out through the secretarial staff.
The department makes the following suggestions to those students who are interested in the program:
- During the last semester of your sophomore year or the first semester of your junior year, make appointments to talk to the members of the faculty who are most likely to be expert in the research domain you think you might want to pursue.
Ask them to describe the general nature of the research they plan to do during the next two years.
Ask them about their availability to supervise your thesis.
- When you have "chosen" an advisor who is willing to supervise your thesis, pick up a copy of the Departmental Guidelines.
Also, consider whether you might eventually intend to candidate for Honors in Psychology, and follow those procedures if you do.
