Medieval and Renaissance Studies

Program Description

Additional Information

By its very nature as an interdisciplinary pursuit, Medieval and Renaissance Studies offers a number of paths for those committed to demonstrating the usefulness of exploring historically distant periods as models for scholarly analysis. On one hand, research on Medieval and Renaissance topics in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences has inevitably transformed existing assumptions and "common knowledge" in diverse fields, so that a liberal arts curriculum that truly includes historical perspectives is now possible. The study of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is, in fact, an essential element in our culture's self-reflection about its goals and direction, since many of our social attitudes and political and economic assumptions are the direct result of developments in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

On the other hand, Medieval and Renaissance Studies as an enterprise, through organized programs and areas of concentration, provides an opportunity for students and faculty to explore in an integrative way new material and methodologies. To this end, the Medieval and Renaissance Studies minor at Trinity combines courses from the Departments of Art History, Classical Studies, English, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Political Science, Religion, and Speech and Drama.
