DAVID LESCH

Middle East; U.S. diplomatic history

Professor of history; expert on Middle East and American foreign policy; served as news analyst and consultant to the National Security Agency during the Persian Gulf War; interviewed Bashar al-Asad, president of Syria, for a book on the Middle East leader titled The New Lion of Damascus; author of Syria and the United States: Eisenhower’s Cold War in the Middle East and, 1979: The Year that Shaped the Modern Middle East; editor of The Middle East and the United States: A Historical and Political Reassessment; studied in Egypt on a Fulbright Scholarship; has traveled all over the Middle East, including Syria, Jordan and Turkey and visits the region four or five times a year; speaks some Arabic.
