It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Gerald A. “Jerry” Hernandez, library assistant IV in the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library. Jerry, who worked for the University for 31 years, died on Saturday, Nov. 6, after a brief illness.

He was 56. Jerry will be remembered as a beloved employee, avid birdwatcher, and an accomplished baker.

A native of San Antonio, he graduated from Memorial High School in San Antonio and attended San Antonio College and Our Lady of the Lake University. He also had completed more than 240 hours in law enforcement training.

Jerry began his career at Trinity in July 1979 as a building operations clerk at the University library. Although he officially worked as a serials copy cataloger/processor, Jerry was comfortable handling any job that needed to be done,

from assembling shelving, removing and recycling obsolete journal volumes, to volunteering in circulation. He was also known for his ability to catch, identify, and rescue wildlife that occasionally strayed into the library and other buildings  on campus.

Well-liked by both his co-workers and students, Jerry was involved in the life of Trinity, serving in the MENTORS program and on the University Club committee. Library staff enjoyed his talent for creating amazing cakes.

Outside of the University, Jerry loved the outdoors.  He was a serious bird watching enthusiast and a member of the San Antonio Audubon Society.

Jerry is survived by son Jeffery, and daughter Katrina, and four grandchildren. A viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Mission Park North Funeral Home followed by a viewing from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Road. A Mass will immediately follow the viewing at 7:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to wildlife organizations.
