It is with great sadness that we announce the death of General Robert T. Herres, an emeritus member of Trinity’s Board of Trustees.

Gen. Herres, who served on the Board from 1992 to 2004, died Thursday, July 24, at the age of 75.

Gen. Herres is perhaps best known in San Antonio for his leadership at USAA. He served as chairman and chief executive officer of the

financial services company from 1993 until his retirement in 2000.

During his tenure assets for USAA nearly doubled. His professional life also included a distinguished military career, including two tours as a wing commander in the Strategic Air Command, an appointment as the first commander of the United States Space Command, and culminated with his assignment as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Among his many honors, Gen. Herres was named to the South Texas Business Hall of Fame sponsored by Junior Achievement and the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service to youth.

At Trinity, Gen. Herres and his wife demonstrated their commitment to quality education by establishing the Robert T. and Shirley Herres Scholarship Endowment with the intent that scholarships be awarded to worthy Trinity students with the most financial need.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28.  Arrangements are being handled by Porter Loring North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232.
