Trinity Graduate is Awarded Medical School Scholarship

Graduate Juan Olivares, Jr.

A May 2004 graduate of Trinity University is among four students receiving scholarships from the Texas Medical Association to help minority students realize their dream of becoming physicians.

Juan Olivares Jr., who earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Bachelor of Arts in Religion, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to attend the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in the fall. Mr. Olivares is a native of El Paso and attended a health science magnet school there. He plans to practice pediatric surgery in El Paso, where he hopes to create a health care system that is accessible to all people of his community.

Each of the four scholarship recipients was selected from a pool of minority students who have been accepted to a Texas medical school. The TMA minority scholarship program was developed in response to declining minority enrollments in Texas medical schools. This is the first time that the Austin-based association has awarded four scholarships. Dr. Josie Williams, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at Texas A&M University Health Science Center at College Station, said the program is significant in a state that is "woefully short of physicians who can meet the needs of underserved populations."
