Trinity Music Department To Present August Piano Recital Featuring Music By Karol Szymanowski
SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University's music department will present a lecture and piano recital by Juilliard professor Emily White, who will perform the music of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. The event will begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Trinity's Chapman Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
In a program titled "The Birth of Tragedy and the Piano Music of Karol Szymanowski," Dr. White will explore the links between Nietzsche's philosophy and conflicts in the Polish post-Romantic composer's music. During the recital she will play Szymanowski's Don Juan's Serenade and his Third Piano Sonata. In addition, Dr. White will perform works by Debussy, Chopin, and Nietzsche.
Dr. White has appeared as guest recitalist at the International Szymanowski Festival in Poland and has won top prizes at international competitions in England and Austria. She has taken part in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and in the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition in Santander, Spain, where she was selected as the only American of 12 semifinalists.
Dr. White earned music degrees from the University of Maryland summa cum laude with High Honors in Music, The Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. She is a current faculty member of the Juilliard Evening Division and Chair of Piano at the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for Music, Theater, and Dance, and she has taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
