Archaeologist to Shed Light on Hathor, Egyptian Mistress of Gold
SAN ANTONIO - Hathor is one of the most important but misunderstood goddesses in Egyptian mythology. Called "The Golden One," she was associated with music, dance, beauty, and fertility. Archaeologist Suzanne Onstine will examine the influence of the goddess in a presentation titled "Hathor, Mistress of Gold." The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in room 040 of Northrup Hall and is free and open to the public.
During her presentation, Dr. Onstine will explore the many faces of Hathor, including her ties to foreign lands and kingship. She will also examine the origin of Hathor's association with gold.
As an Egyptological consultant, Dr. Onstine has led several tours to Egypt for the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and for the past 10 years she has been an archaeologist and epigrapher for the University of Arizona Egyptian Expedition. In addition, Dr. Onstine is the president of the Arizona chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt. She received her master's and Ph.D. from the department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto.
This event is sponsored by Trinity's department of classical studies and the department of art and art history as well as the local chapter of the AIA. For more information, contact Professor Nicolle Hirschfeld at (210) 999-7125.
