Internationally Known Calligrapher to Discuss The Book of Kells,

a Masterpiece of Medieval Celtic Art

SAN ANTONIO - Denis Brown, an internationally renowned modern day calligrapher will give an illustrated lecture on The Book of Kells, a 9th century manuscript  considered to be a masterpiece of Celtic art, during a dinner presentation at Trinity University on Tuesday, Oct. 11.  Admission is $25 and includes a buffet in Trinity's Skyline Room, located in the Coates Center.  The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the lecture scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

 

The Book of Kells, created by Celtic monks, is an ornately illustrated manuscript containing the Gospels of the New Testament. It is celebrated as a classic piece of Medieval art for both its technical brilliance and lavish beauty.  It is on permanent display in the library of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

 

Mr. Brown considers The Book of Kells to be one of the greatest masterpieces of all time in any art form and credits much of his work to the influence it has had on him.  His lecture also include some of his own works inspired by The Book of Kells.

 

Tickets for the event can be purchased with a check to the Southwest Texas Archaeological Society.  Payment should be mailed to Claire Carter Pederson, 222 Robinhood, San Antonio TX 78209 and must be received by Tuesday, Oct. 4.

 

The buffet menu will feature Caesar salad, penne pasta salad, beef and sausage lasagna, spinach ravioli, Italian green beans, toasted garlic bread, and Italian crème cake.
