Noted Chicana Poet to Give Reading at Trinity University
SAN
ANTONIO - Lorna Dee Cervantes, an influential Chicana poet, will give
a poetry reading on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the Chapman Auditorium of Trinity
University. A reception for Ms. Cervantes will be held at
Ms. Cervantes will give a reading from Drive: The First Quartet, her first published collection of poetry in 15 years.
In 1974 at age 20, Ms. Cervantes founded a literary journal and press, both named Mango, to publish Chicana/o writers. She was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant in 1978 in support of her pioneering work. Her first book of poetry, Emplumada (1981) won an American Book Award; her second book, From the Cables of Genocide: Poems on Love and Hunger, was awarded the Paterson Poetry Prize and the Latino Literature Prize. In addition, Ms. Cervantes was one of the featured poets in Bill Moyers' 1999 television special on poetry titled "Fooling with Words."
She is also the co-editor of Red Dirt, a journal of poetry. Her poems have been published in multiple anthologies including Florence Howe's More Masks! An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Women Poets.
