Classical Studies Professor to Lecture on the First Modern Period of Western Civilization

SAN ANTONIO - Joseph A. Farrell, Jr., a 2005 Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar and professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, will present "Literature and Society in the First Modern Period,
321 BC - AD 235."  The lecture will be held on Monday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Trinity University Chapman Auditorium.

Farrell argues that many of the defining characteristics of modernism existed in the urban culture of the Hellenistic and Roman world from about 325 BC to AD 235.  Farrell also contends that this culture was as modern as those of the various later periods that are considered modern, and thus deserves to be considered the first modern period.

A reception will follow the lecture, which is free and open to the public.  Dr. Farrell's visit is supported by the National Phi Beta Kappa Association, the local Phi Beta Kappa Association, the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the departments of classical studies, art and art history, English, history, modern languages and literatures, philosophy, and religion.
