Two Trinity Students Awarded Software
Engineering Internship
SAN ANTONIO -
Two Trinity University students
are among 10 college students taking part this summer in a software
engineering internship sponsored by the Associated
Colleges of the South (ACS)
Technology Center at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
The Trinity students are Joe Bertles of
Lakeland, Fla., and Jennifer Wilson of Richmond, Texas. Now in its second
year, the internship spans two
months and allows students to learn about software engineering through a
combination of teaching and hands-on applications. For five weeks, the
program focuses on instruction, while the remainder of the time will be
used to develop software as a group. In order to master the concepts
presented in the first five weeks of instruction, programmers will work in
pairs and rotate tasks so that each participant will get to experience all
aspects of software engineering.
The main project for summer 2004 interns is to create a Fedora
Open Source Digital Repository Management System (http://fedora.info). Fedora is a digital
assets management (DAM) system that can store and index various types of
digital files, including documents, images, and audio files. The development of DAM systems is quickly becoming a
necessity as universities face the challenge of archiving, managing, and
distributing collections of digital information in a timely fashion.
The Associated Colleges of the South (ACS)
consists of 16 small, liberal arts institutions in 12 southern states,
including Trinity. Such
internship programs as the Software Engineering summer internship have
been created in order to achieve their mission to enhance liberal arts
education through institutional collaboration.
As a result, all 10 students participating in this internship
attend an institution that is a member of the Associated Colleges of the
South.
