Trinity University To Award Nearly 600 Degrees In May

 

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University will hold two commencement exercises on Saturday, May 13, conferring degrees upon 83 graduate students and 508 undergraduates. Walter R. Huntley ’71, ’73 and a member of the Trinity University Board of Trustees, will deliver the commencement address to undergraduates. John D. Thornton ’87, member of the Trinity University Board of Visitors and general partner in Austin Ventures, will address graduate students.

 

Commencement for students receiving master’s degrees in arts, teaching, accounting, and health care administration is at 9 a.m. in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel. No tickets are necessary for admission. The ceremony for undergraduates is at 10:30 a.m. in Laurie Auditorium, where seating is limited and tickets are required for guests and relatives of candidates for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music degrees.

 

In addition to Mr. Huntley, a graduating senior will speak at Trinity’s undergraduate ceremony. Maurine C. Evans of Birmingham, Ala., who will receive a bachelor’s degree in drama with a minor in English, will address the assembly. At Trinity, she has been a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society. She was named outstanding senior in drama at Trinity and has had major roles in five of Trinity’s main stage productions. In addition, she spent a semester at the London Dramatic Academy as part of the Study Abroad program. She also has been a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, the San Antonio Food Bank, and at various San Antonio nursing homes. She is the daughter of Judy and Danny Evans of Birmingham, Ala. After graduation, she plans to participate in a summer acting apprenticeship with the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown, Mass. In the fall, she will be an apprentice with the Actor’s Theater of Louisville, Ky.

 

Also during the undergraduate ceremony, the Dr. and Mrs. Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship Award will be announced recognizing a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising students. Carol Mansen ’83, president of the Trinity University Alumni Association, also will welcome the new graduates into the association.

 

Mr. Huntley, president of Huntley & Associates in Atlanta, an urban affairs consulting firm, was the Trinity University Distinguished Alumni in 1996. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at Trinity in 1971 and a master’s degree in urban studies in 1973. In 2005, he was inducted into the Trinity University Athletics Hall of Fame. He earned All-Southland Conference honors three times as a split end and free safety and also was selected for the Associated Press All-America Second Team. In 1970, he was chosen for the United Press International All-Texas Team – a team that included all schools in the state, including Texas and Texas A&M. Mr. Huntley was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. After having shoulder surgery, he decided not to play pro football.

 

Mr. Thornton’s firm is one of the nation’s largest venture capital firms that focuses primarily on information technology businesses. Before joining Austin Ventures in 1990, Mr. Thornton was with McKinsey & Co., where he served clients in the United States and Europe. He earned a B.A. summa cum laude in economics from Trinity and earned an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Mr. Thornton is a founding board member of the Austin Entrepreneur’s Foundation.
