Trinity University Announces
2006-2007 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series

 

SAN ANTONIO – A novelist, a nationally-syndicated columnist, a world renowned saxophonist, and a professional stage manager are a few of the distinguished array of outstanding leaders and talent in the fields of art, music, drama, communication, literature, art history, and aesthetics coming to Trinity’s campus as part of the 2006-2007 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.  All events are free and open to the public.

 

  • Internationally known scholar in papermaking and paper history, Timothy Barrett, will open the series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Northrup Hall, Room 040.  In “From Undergraduate to Book Specialist: One Wild Ride,” Mr. Barrett will present a retrospective of his work.

 

  • French saxophonist and pedagogue Jean-Marie Londeix, saxophonist William Street and pianist Roger Admiral will perform and lecture on the remarkable vitality of the modern saxophone repertory in a series of lectures and concerts Sept. 28 - 29. All events will take place in the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall.

 

Mr. Admiral will first give a piano recital at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28.  At 8 p.m., Mr. Londeix will present, “The Saxophone in the Various Musical Streams.”  His presentation will be in French and will be translated by Mr. Street. 

 

At 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, Mr. Londeix will present a second lecture in French, on “Insights into the Saxophone Repertoire,” again to be translated by Mr. Street.

 

Mr. Londeix will hold a master class on the saxophone at 4 p.m. for saxophone players from the University and the local area. And, at 8 p.m., Mr. Street, on saxophone, and Mr. Admiral, on piano, will perform a concert of music for the saxophone.

 

  • Short story writer and novelist Tim O’Brien will come to the Stieren Theater on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.  In “An Evening with Tim O’Brien:  A Reading with Commentary,” the author will discuss and read from his works which include Pulitzer Prize finalist, The Things They Carried and National Book Award winner Going After Cacciato.

 

  • Professional stage manager Jennifer Birge, whose career spans 15 years, will present, “Beyond ½ Hour…Stage Managing One Acts to Super Bowl Halftime Shows,” on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Stieren Theater.  Ms. Birge has managed many prestigious theater companies and worked on numerous large scale events, including the Tribeca Film Festival and Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show.

 

  • James Herbert, professor and chair of the department of art history and co-founder of the graduate program in visual studies at the University of California, Irvine, will come to Trinity’s campus on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m.  “Walking the Way of the Cross:  Robert Wilson’s 14 Stations at MASS MocA,” will take place in Northrup Hall Room 040.  Dr. Herbert’s expertise is in European art and music from the 17th century to the present.

 

  • The highly acclaimed Weilerstein Trio will perform on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in Ruth Taylor Recital Hall.  Weilerstein Trio is the trio-in-residence at the New England Conservatory of Music and has performed in many of the world’s major cities and on nationally broadcast radio programs St. Paul Sunday and NPR Performance Today.

 

  • The Stieren series will close on Monday, Feb. 5, with author and New York Times columnist Frank Rich. “On Culture and Politics:  An Evening with Frank Rich” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium.  As an op-ed columnist, Mr. Rich writes weekly essays on the intersection of culture and news.  He also serves as senior adviser to The Times’ culture editor on the paper’s overall cultural news report.
