A Real Pulp Story: Trinity Stieren Guest Says Career in Papermaking

One Wild Ride

SAN ANTONIO –Timothy Barrett, an internationally known scholar in papermaking and paper history, will give a retrospective of his work when he presents, “From Undergraduate to Book Specialist: One Wild Ride,” on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Trinity University’s Northrup Hall, Room 040. His free public lecture begins at

7 p.m. and kicks off the University’s 2006-2007 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.

Mr. Barrett will emphasize how his wide range of interests as an undergraduate led, by various twists and turns, to a very rewarding career as a specialist in Japanese and early European papermaking.  He produces one-of-a-kind artist’s books using handmade paper and leather.

Mr. Barrett joined the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book as a paper specialist in 1986 and served as director of the center from 1996-2002.  His career includes a Fulbright Fellowship studying papermaking in Japan and several years of research on early European handmade papers funded by the NEA and the Kress Foundation.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings to Trinity’s campus a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, communication, literature, art history, and aesthetics.  It is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and the late Arthur Stieren of San Antonio.

For more information on Mr. Barrett’s lecture, please contact Trinity’s department of art and art history at (210) 999-7682.
