Award-Winning Author and Professional Stage Manager to Visit Trinity University in October
SAN ANTONIO – Two noted masters in their respective artistic fields will come to Trinity University’s campus in October. “An Evening with Tim O’Brien: A Reading with Commentary” will feature the short story writer and novelist on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. Professional stage manager Jennifer Birge will present, “Beyond ½ Hour…Stage Managing One Acts to Super Bowl Halftime Shows,” on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. Both events will be held in the Stieren Theater and are free and open to the public. They are part of the University’s 2006-2007 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.
O’Brien, whose writing often deals with the Vietnam War, will discuss and read from his works. These include The Things They Carried, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and National Book Critic Circle Award finalist, and Going After Cacciato, a National Book Award winner. His most recent works are In the Lake of the Woods and Tomcat in Love. O'Brien's short stories have appeared in Esquire, Harper's, Atlantic, Gentleman's Quarterly, The New Yorker, and in several editions of The O. Henry Prize Stories, the Pushcart Prize, and Best American Short Stories. In 1987, he received the National Magazine Award for his story The Things They Carried, which was also selected for inclusion in the Best American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike. O’Brien is a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He currently holds an endowed chair at Texas State University.
Birge, whose career in traditional theater has spanned 15 years, will discuss how she arrived in theater from humble beginnings in television and moved on to managing live, large scale events. She has managed many prestigious theater companies, including Lincoln Center Theater, Carnegie Hall, and the Walt Disney Co. Her work on large scale events includes the Tribeca Film Festival and Super Bowl XXXIV’s halftime show.
The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings to Trinity’s campus a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, communication, literature, art history, and aesthetics. It is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and the late Arthur Stieren of San Antonio.
