SAN ANTONIO – With a fundraising objective of $3 million, Trinity University President John R. Brazil has announced The Campaign for Trinity University’s Health Care Administration program. “Our desire is to see the program build on its reputation as a national center for excellence in health care leadership,” Brazil said in launching the initiative.

Key goals of the campaign are to enhance the vitality of Trinity’s Health Care Administration program through curricular offerings and faculty development, to further develop the Center for Leadership Development in Health Management, and to provide fellowships and other financial aid to students.

Unveiled three years ago, the Center for Leadership Development in Health Management prepares future leaders for health services administration. It emphasizes the integration of conceptual and experiential learning, offering a real-world approach to students and thus equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be capable managers and innovators.

“We want to be known nationally as the program that effectively combines academics with the field of practice,” said Mary E. Stefl, professor and chair of the health care administration department.

Trinity’s Health Care Administration program has been accredited continuously since 1969 by the Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education, formerly known as the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration. Alumni work in 47 states and six foreign countries, and three of the program’s graduates have been included three consecutive years in Modern Healthcare’s annual list of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.”

Earlier this year, the program was recognized as one of the top programs in health care management in U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools. Trinity offers two options for obtaining a Master of Science in Health Care Administration, an on-campus program that emphasizes coursework and a 12-month residency and the executive program for individuals working in a health care setting who can participate in distance learning. Both are equivalent in terms of quality, rigor, and curricular content.

Bob Shaw ’69, ’72, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio, is chairing the campaign steering committee. “As a Trinity alumnus, I have a deep personal interest in the University and when asked to be the chair of this inaugural campaign for the Health Care Administration program, I accepted without hesitation,” he said.

The Health Care Administration’s initiative was launched publicly in May as part of the University’s ongoing Campaign for Trinity University. With a goal of $200 million, the campaign will provide for additional scholarships and financial aid, enhanced faculty research and program initiatives, and facility improvements. The University is seeking support from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations.

Trinity University, founded in 1869, is one of the nation’s top private undergraduate institutions. Noted for its superior academic quality, outstanding faculty, and exceptional academic and residential resources, Trinity is committed to the intellectual, civic, and professional preparation of its students.
