The Alameda in Black and White:  McNay Art Museum to Exhibit Photographs of San Antonio Landmark by Trinity Art Professor

SAN ANTONIO – The famed Alameda Theater, once the premiere destination for watching Mexican films in San Antonio, is the subject of a solo exhibition of photographs by Patricia Simonite, associate professor of art and art history at Trinity University.  The exhibit, titled “Alameda Ayer (Alameda Yesterday),” will run from Sept. 12 until
Jan. 6 at the McNay Art Museum, located at 6000 N. New Braunfels Ave.

A reception will be held at the start of the exhibition from 6 p.m. to
8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the McNay Art Museum.

Opening in 1949, the Alameda Theater was one of the last grand movie palaces built in the United States.  It was also the largest theater dedicated to Spanish language films and performing arts.

“Alameda Ayer” presents more than two dozen black and white photographs of the interior of the Alameda Theater lobby.  Simonite captured the images in 1980, in the waning days of the Alameda’s life as a movie house.  The images were taken using a 4”x5” view camera.  The photographs by Simonite juxtapose the elegant architectural and decorative details of the theater with lobby signs, movie posters, and concession snacks.

Simonite will give an artist talk on her exhibition at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the McNay Art Museum.

For more information on the exhibit and the artist talk, call the McNay Art Museum at 210-824-5368.
