Disability Services Coordinator Joins Trinity University Staff
SAN ANTONIO – Gavin Steiger, formerly the assistant director for compliance and disability services at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., has been named coordinator of disability services for students at Trinity University. He will work with more than 100 Trinity students with disabilities, ensuring that they are provided with equal access to all facets of academic life as well as to related programs and services on the University campus. He also will arrange classroom accommodations for these students.
While at Purdue, Steiger’s primary responsibility entailed handling disability issues for members of the faculty and university staff by providing accommodations in the workplace and ensuring general campus accessibility. Previously, as a disability specialist assistant at the University of Georgia in Athens, his service in the area of disability services was under the umbrella of student affairs. Drawing on his experiences in both the student realm and the employment sector, Steiger feels he brings unique insight that will not only allow him to assist Trinity students on campus, but also aid their transition from higher education to the workforce.
Steiger received a master’s in education from the University of Georgia and a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He is currently active on state and national levels in the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), the American College Personnel Association and was, at Purdue, involved in the American Association for Affirmative Action.
Steiger began working at Trinity in late August. His placement and expanded accountability testify to Trinity University's continuing commitment to the diversity of its student population and the inclusion of and accessibility for persons facing various physical and academic challenges.
Trinity University, founded in 1869, is one of the nation’s top private undergraduate institutions. Noted for its superior academic quality, outstanding faculty, and exceptional academic and residential resources, Trinity is committed to the intellectual, civic, and professional preparation of its students.
