Trinity University to Present Series of International Films in October

 

SAN ANTONIO – As part of the Coates Library Cinema Series, Trinity University will debut four independent films in October that have been selected by film festival organizers and jurists from across the world. The films are shown in their native languages but will be subtitled in English. The presentations are free and open to the public.

 

The Cinema Series will run on each Wednesday of the month of October: Oct. 3, 10, 17, and 24 in Trinity’s Northrup Hall, Room 040 at 7 p.m.

 

The featured films of the Coates Library Cinema Series are:

 

·        Oct. 3Viva Cuba (Cuba): In a tale parallel to “Romeo and Juliet,” the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences. The film was Cuba’s submission for Best Foreign Film at the 2007 Academy Awards, and received the Junior Prize at Cannes. (Running Time: 80 min.)

 

·        Oct. 10 The Island (Russia): The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine. The Island has received numerous awards, including Best Film at the Moscow International Film Festival and the Nika Russian Film Awards 2006. (Running Time: 112 min.)

 

·        Oct. 17 The Way I Spent the End of the World (Romania): This tragic-comedy is set in Bucharest in 1989 and revolves around a 17-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother. This film was Romania’s submission for the Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category and was awarded the Best Actress Prize at Cannes. (Running Time: 106 min.)

 

·        Oct. 24 Das Fraulein (Germany-Switzerland): This film is a story about a friendship between three women from Yugoslavia. This official selection to the Sundance Film Festival has won prizes at festivals across the globe. (Running Time: 81 min.)
