Dulce Pinzón to Speak and Exhibit Photographs at Trinity University

Dulce Pinzón

SAN ANTONIO – Photographer Dulce Pinzón will discuss her latest project “The True Story of Superheroes,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall.  The lecture is free and open to the public and is part of the 2007-2008 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.

Her photos, which feature Mexican immigrants in their work environment donning superhero garb and raise questions of both our definition of heroism and our ignorance/indifference to the workforce that fuels our economy, will be on display in the Dicke Building Art Gallery from Jan. 14 through Feb. 22. A meet-the-artist reception is also scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Dicke Building Art Gallery.

“The True Story of Superheroes” is a collection of 20 color photographs of Mexican immigrants cloaked in costumes of popular U.S. and Mexican superheroes while performing their everyday work.  The exhibit pays homage to the mostly unnoticed contributions of these laborers who often endure extreme personal hardship in conditions of low wages and difficult circumstances.

Ms. Pinzón studied mass media in Mexico and photography at Indiana University in Pennsylvania before moving to New York in 1995 to study at the International Center for Photography. Ms. Pinzón is a 2006 Fellow in Photography from the New York Foundation of the Arts.  In 2006 she won an Honorific Mention in the Santa Fe project competition with “The True Story of Superheroes” series.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings to Trinity’s campus a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, communication, literature, art history, and aesthetics.  It is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and the late Arthur T. Stieren of San Antonio.
