José Sarukhán, ‘Founding Father of Ecological Research in Mexico,’ to speak at Trinity University
SAN ANTONIO – José Sarukhán, professor of ecology at the National University of Mexico, will discuss “Problems of the Global Environment: The Flip Side of the Coin” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in Laurie Auditorium, as part of the Trinity University Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Manifestations of climate change have negatively impacted all the regions of the planet and the scientific evidence of the phenomenon is irrefutable. However, the “flip side” of this global environmental problem, less known and less publicized, looms over humanity in an equally serious manner. This is the loss of ecosystems that contain the species that share the planet with us. Humankind has always depended on these ecosystems for fresh water, clean air, food, fibers, medicines, etc.
The rate at which marine and terrestrial ecosystems are being lost through land use changes, over-exploitation, and pollution is unprecedented and will adversely affect the well-being of whole communities and countries. Examples of such losses will be discussed. Rational use and conservation of the Earth’s ecosystems can halt this trend and safeguard the environment for future generations.
Dr. Sarukhán has published more than 110 scientific papers and several books on ecology, and biodiversity, contributed to reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and is on board of directors for the World Resources Institute. He has received several distinctions including the Mexican Government’s National Science Prize and the Centennial Award of the Botanical Society of America.
The Trinity University Distinguished Scientist Lecture Series is made possible through an endowment created by Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown of San Antonio. For more information, contact Trinity University’s Office of University Communications at 210-999-8406.
