Speak Theatre Arts Company Subverts Racism with Comedy
SAN ANTONIO – Sometimes the best way to confront racism and bigotry is through humor. And sometimes the more shocking the comedy is, the closer to the truth it gets. Blending theater, slam poetry, hip hop, stand-up comedy, and personal stories, three performers with the Speak Theatre Arts Production Company take on racial slurs, stereotypes, and the concept of race itself. Their production, titled “N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk” will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.
The evening of Guerilla Theater has been called “explosive” and “inspiring.” The performance has received rave reviews from The Los Angeles Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and The New York Times. The performance also won the “Best Play” award from the American Readers Theater Association.
The performance is part of Trinity University’s Difficult Dialogues program. For the spring semester, Trinity will host a series of events to examine the culture and civic status. Funding for the Difficult Dialogues program is provided by the Ford Foundation.
