Trinity University Alumni Association to Host Panel Discussion on the Role of the Supreme Courts

SAN ANTONIO – High school civics teaches us that each branch of government has separate and distinct powers. But, in the case of the judiciary, is the Supreme Court the final arbiter of the Constitution? Should the Supreme Court confer constitutional legitimacy on the elected branches of government? Can the Supreme Court pursue an independent agenda? David Crockett and John R. Hermann, associate professors of political science, will discuss different views and perspectives on the appropriate role of the Supreme Court in the constitutional system at noon Wednesday, March 5, in the Coates University Center Fiesta Room. Their presentation, “Terminator or Legitimator: Is the Supreme Court the Ultimate Arbiter of the Constitution?” is part of the Trinity University Alumni Association’s 2008 Food for Thought luncheon lecture series.

Other speakers and topics in the 2008 Food For Thought series are:

·        April 2 – David Spener, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, “From Bull Connor to Border Walls: Reading Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail in Light of Today's Immigration Debate.”

·        May 7 – Alida Metcalf, professor of history, and Michelle Millet, information literacy coordinator of the Coates University Library, “Expanding Horizons through Information Literacy.”

All luncheons will begin at noon. Individual lectures are $14 per person.  Reservations should be made three days in advance by calling the Alumni Relations Office at 210-999-8404.

The Food For Thought series offers Trinity professors the opportunity to leave the classroom and speak on their research or field of study to the San Antonio community.  The Food For Thought luncheon lecture series is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the Trinity University Alumni Association.
