Journalist Seymour Hersh to Speak at Trinity University’s Inaugural Maverick Lecture Series
SAN ANTONIO – Seymour Hersh, award-winning journalist of The New Yorker, will speak on American foreign policy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Laurie Auditorium. His free public lecture is a part of Trinity University’s Maverick Lecture Series.
Through his writing, Mr. Hersh has challenged abuses of power and held the privileged to account in the court of public opinion. He has uncovered some of the most important news stories of our times, and in the process shown America that power, and the exercising of that power on the international stage, comes with a price. No where is that more true than in his most recent bestseller, Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib, which has made him once again a subject of national and international attention.
Mr. Hersh’s journalism and publishing awards include a Pulitzer Prize, five George Polk Awards, two National Magazine Awards, and more than a dozen other prizes for investigative reporting. His books include the best-selling exposé of President Kennedy, The Dark Side of Camelot, and The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House, which has won several national awards. His cautionary tales reveal what happens when governments seek to operate unhindered by the checks and balances of our constitutional system.
Mr. Hersh has not just reported on events; he has influenced them. He continues to be one of the most controversial and insightful commentators on foreign policy in the U.S. today. His reporting goes far beyond headlines to the core problems of ideology and personal intrigue that drive so much of American foreign policy.
The Maverick Lecture, presented by Trinity University’s history department, will be an annual lecture that honors the late Maury Maverick Jr., the legendary civil rights lawyer, former member of the Texas Legislature, former Marine, and iconoclastic newspaper columnist. The lecture series will explore topics that defined Mr. Maverick’s place in American civic discourse. These topics will include threats to constitutional liberty, with particular emphasis on the First Amendment, issues of poverty and race, Western occupation of Third World Countries, and the moral requirements of war. The Maverick Lecture Series is underwritten by the William and Salomé Scanlan Foundation.
