Traversing Cultures to Pursue a Dream: Scholar to Speak on Creating Transnational Art
SAN ANTONIO – A distinguished scholar of Latino Culture will speak on artwork created from the mingling of cultures between the United States and Mexico. Tomas Ybarra-Frausto, a native of San Antonio and former Associate Director for Creativity and Culture at the Rockefeller Foundation, will speak on “De imágenes y sueños: Transnational Visual Culture.” The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 18, in Trinity’s Holt Center with a reception and a music performance by Azúl. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Ybarra-Frausto’s lecture will address the transgressive visual creations of contemporary Mexican and Mexican American artists, specifically their creative departures from traditional Mexican expression in both subject matter and approach. His lecture will examine painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture, and installation art. Commenting on Dr. Ybarra-Frausto’s lecture will be Professors Amelia Malagamba from Arizona State University and Norma Iglesias from San Diego State University.
Prior to joining the Rockefeller Foundation, Dr. Ybarra-Frausto was a professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Stanford University and he served as the chair of the Mexican Museum in San Francisco and the Smithsonian Council. In addition, Dr. Ybarra-Frausto has published several works, focusing mainly on Latin American and U.S./Latino cultural issues. In 1998, Dr. Ybarra-Frausto was awarded the Henry Medal by the Smithsonian Institution.
The presentation is the final event in Trinity University’s 2008 Lennox Seminar, titled Cultural Transgressions of the Immediate Kind, which explored the evolving cultural practices and artistic expressions of both Mexicans and Mexican Americans, with particular attention to literature, performance, and art. It is sponsored, in part, by a grant from Humanities Texas.
