Nieman Fellow from Harvard University to Speak on Immersion Journalism during Lecture at Trinity University

 

SAN ANTONIO – Iason Athanasiadis, a freelance journalist and Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, will speak about his experience in immersion journalism at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, in the Science Lecture Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

 

In his presentation, “Practicing Middle East Immersion Journalism in the Age of Globalization,” Mr. Athanasiadis will speak on immersion journalism, which he describes as the practice of “first learning the language and understanding the culture of a region before reporting on it.”

 

Along with the lecture, Mr. Athanasiadis will show some of his most remarkable photographs taken in the Middle East.

 

Mr. Athanasiadis, a political analyst and television producer, has worked as a journalist for the BBC and Al-Jazeera and has published articles in papers such as the Los Angeles Times, the Christian Science Monitor, the Washington Times, and the Guardian. He has lived for extended periods in Cairo, Tehran, and Istanbul and has reported from Afghanistan, Cuba, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Greece, Syria, Turkey, Qatar, and Yemen as well as other parts of the Middle East.
