Between the Rhetoric and the Reality: Sociology Professor to Speak on Immigration Debate during Lecture at Trinity University
SAN ANTONIO – Rubén Rumbaut, sociology professor at the University of California-Irvine, will speak on how perceptions of immigration have been shaped more by rhetoric than by reality at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, in the Science Lecture Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
During his presentation, “The Distorted Immigration Debate: Crime, Language, Health, and the Widening Gap between Rhetoric and Reality,” Dr. Rumbaut will speak on the types of immigrants and refugees and their reception, differences in adaptation between generations, bilingualism and language loss, ethnic identity, citizenship and national membership, crime and incarceration, depression and self-esteem, and paradoxes of integration.
Dr. Rumbaut has directed, with Alejandro Portes, the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study, which has followed the transitions into early adulthood of youth representing dozens of different nationalities from Latin America and Asia. He has also directed a large-scale study of Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles. His research is also focused on infant health and mortality, fertility, socioeconomic mobility, educational achievement and aspirations, immigration policies and politics, and the social origins of immigration scholars.
To learn more about this presentation, contact David Spener, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, at 210-999-8562, or e-mail at dspener@trinity.edu.
