Nobel Prize Recipient to Discuss Sensory Perception During DeCoursey  Lecture at Trinity University

Linda Buck

SAN ANTONIO – Linda Buck, winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, will present the Trinity University DeCoursey Lecture for the 2008-2009 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in Laurie Auditorium. The title of her talk is “Unraveling the Sense of Smell.” Her presentation is free and open to the public.

The olfactory system of mammals is characterized by exquisite sensitivity and discriminatory power. Dr. Buck and her colleagues have identified large families of receptors that are responsible for the detection of odor and pheromone molecules.

Using genes that encode these receptors, together with genetic and cellular techniques, they have explored how odor and pheromone molecules are encoded in the nervous system to generate diverse perceptions and behavioral effects. Their work has revealed a combinatorial coding mechanism and segregation of channels in order to distinguish 1,000 different odorant perceptions in the brain.

Dr. Buck is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, associate director of basic sciences at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and affiliate professor of physiology and biophysics at the University of Washington.

Among the many awards recognizing her key insights into the mechanisms that underlie the sense of smell in mammals, Dr. Buck has received the Takasago Award for Research in Olfaction, The R.H.Wright Award in Olfactory Research, the Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award for Distinguished Work in Medical Research, and the Perl/UNC Neuroscience Prize.

Doors to Laurie Auditorium will open at 6:45 p.m. on the evening of the lecture.  The lecture series is made possible by a gift from the late Gen. Elbert DeCoursey and Mrs. DeCoursey of San Antonio.
