Professor to Discuss Retro-Futurism during Trinity University’s Food For Thought Luncheon Lecture Series

SAN ANTONIO – Americans’ orientations toward the future and past are in the midst of considerable flux. Michael Kearl, professor of sociology and anthropology, will explore this phenomenon as the first speaker of Trinity University Alumni Association’s 2009 Food for Thought luncheon lecture series. His presentation, titled, “The Futures of Times Past: Retro-Futurism and the Retreat of the Golden Age from the Future to the Past,” will take place at noon Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the Coates University Center Fiesta Room.  Professor Kearl will discuss a growing sense of disconnection from the past, as evidenced by growing historical ignorance and false nostalgias, plus considerable dread toward the future.

Other speakers and topics in the 2009 Food For Thought series are:

·        Feb. 4 – Randall Nadeau, professor and chair of the department of religion, “Chinese Religions as a Model for Inter-religious Dialogue.”

·        March 4 – Aaron Delwiche, assistant professor of communication, “Video-game Literacy: Seven Things You Should Know about the Medium That Has Captured the Hearts and Minds of Contemporary Youth.”

·        April 1 – Nicolle Hirschfeld, assistant professor of classical studies, “Exploring the Underwater World of the Ancient Mediterranean.”

·        May 7 – Stephen Field, J.K. and Ingrid Lee Professor of Chinese Language and Literature and chair of the department of modern languages and literatures, “Expanding Horizons through Information Literacy.”

All luncheons will begin at noon. A season subscription to the series is available for $70. Individual lectures are $15 per person.  Reservations should be made three days in advance by calling the Alumni Relations Office at 210-999-8404.

The Food For Thought series offers Trinity professors the opportunity to leave the classroom and speak on their research or field of study to the San Antonio community.  The Food For Thought luncheon lecture series is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the Trinity University Alumni Association.
