Trinity University’s Speech and Drama Department Presents a New Translation of Moliere’s The Misanthrope
SAN ANTONIO – The speech and drama department at Trinity University will close its 2008-2009 theater season with a new translation of The Misanthrope, a comedy of manners by Moliere, translated by Robert Cohen, and directed by Susanna Morrow. The play will be staged in the Stieren Theater at 8 p.m. Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18; at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19; at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23; and at 8 p.m. Friday, April 24, and Saturday April 25. Individual tickets are $8 for regular admission, $6 for senior citizens/faculty/staff, and $4 for students. This production is recommended for mature audiences.
This update of Moliere’s classic comedy takes the stage in a contemporary world of tabloids, high fashion, and reality television—presenting the notion that Moliere’s 17th century French aristocracy is not far off from our modern fascination with such pop icons as Paris Hilton and Brangelina. Set in the glamorously vicious world of upper-class privilege, Moliere’s dynamic comedy bristles with energy and fun, showcasing the social machinations of spoiled aristocrats.
Reservations are strongly suggested for this production and can be made by contacting the Stieren Theater box office Monday through Friday between 2 to 5 p.m. or one hour prior to each performance. For reservations and more information, call the box office at 210-999-8515.
