Gloria Anzaldúa

Gloria E. Anzaldúa

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University’s Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS) program will host a poetry reading in honor of Chicana writer Gloria E. Anzaldúa at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 17, in Northrup Hall Room 040.  The poetry reading, part of El Mundo Zurdo, the first international conference on the life and work of Dr. Anzaldúa, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Anzaldúa was the author of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, considered a groundbreaking work on living in several different and conflicting cultural worlds at the same time. She died on May 15, 2004 and the conference commemorates the fifth anniversary of her passing.

The event will feature:

  • Norma E. Cantú – professor of English at the University of Texas, San Antonio and the conference organizer.

  • Alicia Gaspar de Alba – professor and chair of the César Chávez Department of Chicana & Chicano Studies at UCLA.

  • Amelia Maria de la Luz Montes – associate professor of English and Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

  • Naomi Quiñones poet and lecturer in Raza studies at San Francisco State University.

  • Rita Urquijo-Ruiz – assistant professor of modern languages and literatures at Trinity University.

El Mundo Zurdo was organized by The Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldúa to promote the literary and cultural legacy of the late Chicana lesbian feminist.

The international conference is sponsored by the University of Texas at San Antonio; The University of Texas, Pan American; the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center; and Trinity University.
