From a Texas Ranch to Wall Street, Trinity University Student Thrives

SAN ANTONIO -- Taylor Woodard is certain that she made the right decision when she chose Trinity University four years ago. Coming from a ranch near the tiny burg of Junction, Texas, Ms. Woodard didn’t think that a student using a scooter for transportation and dealing with language challenges would thrive at a bigger university.

Instead, she says her experience as a disabled student at Trinity has expanded the concept of “it takes a village.” With the help of caring faculty and staff members, she has blossomed into an academic champion. Last summer, she landed a Wall Street internship and was invited to return after graduating May 16 with honors. In July, she will report to JP Morgan Chase to begin her professional career. And she thanks the Trinity community for empowering her with what she calls “the courage and confidence to chase my dreams no matter the barriers I face.”

Ms. Woodard was even able to participate in one of Trinity’s rich traditions. Shortly before commencement, Trinity seniors climbed the Murchison Tower to shake hands with the University president, who is waiting at the top. Because of Taylor’s mobility challenges, several staffers – including Dean of Students David Tuttle, Counseling Services Director Gary Neal, and Gavin Steiger, coordinator of disability services – carried her to the top of the tower, where Trinity President John R. Brazil greeted her warmly.

A business administration major, Ms. Woodard says she began her academic studies at Trinity anticipating rigorous and competitive courses, which she believes gave her the confidence to accept the Wall Street internship. At Trinity, she says she has “encountered unexpected and overwhelming support, instilling in me a bold confidence that allows me to fearlessly venture out, now knowing there are many good people anxious to lend a hand and help propel me to success.”

Best wishes for a bright future, Taylor!
