Trinity University Students Raise Money for ‘First Book’ Charity
SAN ANTONIO – Do you remember the first book you read or that someone read to you? Members of Trinity University’s chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) recall that excitement and wanted to share the experience with young readers.
To participate in the NSCS “First Book” program and to blend their enthusiasm for Internet social networking, Trinity students generated funds for children’s books by becoming “fans” of the nonprofit organization on its Facebook page. The organization donated 10 cents per click to the book campaign, and by the end of April, more than 15,000 Trinity students and friends had “become a fan,” generating $1,500 for First Book.
Anne Wooton, junior and president of the Trinity chapter of NSCS, who is from Baltimore and majoring in history and anthropology, said the Golden Key International Honor Society also joined in the effort. “I remember how much I enjoyed reading as a child, so I hope the kids who receive these books will develop the same passion about reading,” she said.
The Trinity organizations chose St. Peter – St. Joseph Children’s Home in San Antonio as the agency to benefit from the First Book program.
The NSCS is a nonprofit organization that recognizes and engages high-achieving college students at 235 universities in the nation. First Book was chosen as the donation recipient because of the strong connection between reading at an early age and academic success.
The society is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first- and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing.
