Reading TUgether focuses on Global Health Issues

David Walton

SAN ANTONIO – Dr. David Walton will speak on the work of Paul Farmer and Partners in Health, chronicled in Mountains Beyond Mountains, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, in Trinity University’s Laurie Auditorium. He is a protégé of Dr. Farmer. His lecture is part of Welcome Week, a series of events launching Trinity’s 2009-2010 academic year. The presentation is free and open to the public.

As part of the Reading TUgether program, first-year Trinity students and the entire Trinity community are encouraged to read Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder. “Reading TUgether, while still a new program in Trinity’s history, has already made a huge impact by engaging the entire community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. What makes this program particularly relevant is how the selection of the book and speaker ties into the mission of our University to educate students for global citizenship. As future global leaders and citizens, students must be intentional about understanding diverse cultures and perspectives as well as utilizing the gift of their education to make a positive difference in the world. It is an important mark of a liberal arts education and the response to this program has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Felicia J. Lee, vice president for Student Affairs.

Dr. Walton received a bachelor’s of arts degree from Augustana College and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. In 1998 he became a research assistant for Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health, an organization whose mission is to bring health care and social justice to the poor of the world. He completed the Doris and Howard Hiatt Global Health Equity Residency Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and received his master’s degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2007. Dr. Walton is currently an associate physician and hospitalist in the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
