Highlights of
Dream. Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University

The Campaign for Trinity University created more than 60 new endowments for scholarships and professorships that will enable the University to attract the highest caliber students and faculty. The campaign also is financing enhancements to the University’s technology learning resources and improvements to and the addition of new facilities.

Among the gifts:

  • AT&T made a $5 million grant to support a campus-wide program to enhance technological resources. Primary beneficiaries were the Center for Learning and Technology and the KRTU-FM 91.7 campus radio station.

  • The Brown Foundation Inc. of Houston authorized a $2 million grant for the Distinguished Scholars Program, a scholarship for high-achieving students.

  • San Antonio’s Methodist Healthcare Ministries pledged a $1.1 million gift in honor of John E. Hornbeak, retired president and CEO of Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio. The funds will endow a scholarship for full-time students enrolled in the Health Care Administration graduate program at Trinity.

  • Andrew W. Mellon Foundation pledged an $830,000 grant to bridge overlapping salaries of retiring professors and junior faculty who will be hired prior to their retirement.

  • Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers Foundation made a $500,000 gift to endow a Women’s History Month lecture and resource center for interdisciplinary scholarship.

  • Carlos and Malu Alvarez announced a $250,000 gift to support Trinity’s MAS program, which stands for Mexico, the Americas, and Spain, and offers study, research, and internship opportunities along with the study abroad program.

  • Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas approved a $200,000 gift in honor of Douglas Hawthorne ’69, ’72, a Trinity University Trustee, and chief executive officer of Texas Health Resources. The funds will benefit the Health Care Administration department’s Center for Leadership Development in Health Management.

  • The estate of Dorothy Everheart Kohler ’40, an alumna from Trinity’s campus in Waxahachie, provided $87,000 for the MAS program.

Other highlights:

  • Trinity University Trustees pledged nearly $45 million.

  • Trinity’s 36-member National Alumni Board pledged 100 percent participation.

  • About 43 percent, roughly $87 million, came from San Antonio donors.

  • The campaign brought 22,326 donors and 44,516 pledges, gifts, and matching gifts.

  • An anonymous gift of $1.25 million funded a new professorship for international business. The faculty position is named in honor of Richard M. Burr, professor of business administration, and Donald N. Clark, history professor, both of whom sparked the donor’s interest in China and business. Deli Yang, a renowned expert in the field of intellectual property business and consultant to the United Nations, was selected to hold the professorship and will begin teaching in the fall of 2009.

  • Tennis alumni and other friends of Trinity’s championship tennis program pledged more than $500,000 for the Mabry Tennis Pavilion. Dedicated in May 2008, the pavilion functions as a tournament headquarters and press box and was named in honor of former coach Clarence Mabry.

  • Trinity’s “miracle” football play, which occurred in the fall of 2007, sparked renewed interest in campaign donations.
