Trinity Student Receives $5,000 Study Abroad Scholarship

 Amy Taffet

SAN ANTONIO – Amy Taffet ’11, a Trinity University student from Houston, has been awarded a Scholar Abroad Scholarship by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Ms. Taffet, who is studying this fall in Salamanca, Spain, is a double major in English and Spanish.

The Washington, D.C.-based organization awards one $5,000 scholarship every fall and spring to support a student’s experience abroad. Ms. Taffet chose Salamanca because of its “relatively small size, historic universities, and beautiful Castilian accent.” While in the program, she hopes to improve her Spanish and enjoy the unique culture of Salamanca. Besides taking several Spanish classes, Taffet will teach English and do volunteer work with senior citizens.

She is a candidate for graduation in 2011 and is considering enrolling in Trinity’s Master of Arts in Teaching program to teach English as a Second Language to elementary school children.

Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS’ executive director, said Ms. Taffet’s application stood out from the hundreds he has read. “Her answers were focused, specific, and explained how this program would help her, both in her undergraduate years and beyond,” he said.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first- and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing, with chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
