Anthropologist to Speak During Distinguished Scientists Lecture at Trinity University

Sarah Hrdy

SAN ANTONIO Sarah Hrdy, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California, Davis, will discuss “Mothers and Others: How Humans Became Such Hyper-social Apes” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, in Laurie Auditorium, as part of the Trinity University Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Humans are remarkably similar to apes.  Like their larger brained, bipedal “cousins,” Great Apes are extremely clever, use tools and exhibit a rudimentary understanding of causality and Theory of Mind.  However, apes fall short of humans in understanding the intentions of others and cooperating with them.

Dr. Hrdy graduated summa cum laude from Radcliffe College and earned her doctorate in anthropology from Harvard.  A former Guggenheim fellow, she has been elected to the California Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  She is the author of five books including The Langours of Abu: Female and Male Strategies of Reproduction, the first book to examine the reproductive strategies of nonhuman primates from the perspective of both sexes, and Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants and Natural Selection, which won the Howells Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Biological Anthropology and was chosen by both Publisher’s Weekly and Library Journal as one of the “Best Books of 1999.”   For many years she edited the Foundations of Human Behavior series and continues to serve on editorial boards for Evolutionary Anthropology and Human Nature.

The Trinity University Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series is made possible through an endowment gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown of San Antonio.  For more information, contact Trinity University’s Office of University Communications at 210-999-8406.
