Trinity University Announces Class Marshal and Alumni Sponsor for the Class of 2014
SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University has announced the Class Marshal and Alumni Sponsor to promote class unity for incoming Trinity students who will graduate in 2014. They are Rita Urquijo-Ruiz, associate professor of Spanish in the modern languages and literatures department, and Geary Reamey ’70, professor of law at St. Mary’s University.
The Class Marshal initiative was recommended by the 2006 Trinity University Upper Class Task Force as a way to strengthen bonds among first-year students and to provide mentor support. By strengthening this peer group, students will connect more closely with a specific, yet diverse group, within the University structure. Related programs involve a second-year housing area and the election of student senators by class year.
Born in Sonora, Mexico, and raised in southern California, Professor Urquijo-Ruiz, studied as an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside, earning a degree in Spanish and ethnic studies. She received a doctorate from the University of California, San Diego, in 2004 in literature with an emphasis in Chicano/Mexican literature and culture. Professor Urquijo-Ruiz has served on the Trinity University Faculty Senate, co-directs the Women’s and Gender Studies program, and is on the board of Jump-Start Performance Company in San Antonio.
As Class Marshal, she will serve as a welcoming and personal representative of the faculty and will remain visible throughout the four years the students are on campus. She will provide context for the college experience, highlighting rituals, challenges, and various stages of college life.
Alumni Sponsor Mr. Reamey graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in history in 1970 and went on to earn two legal degrees from Southern Methodist University. A law professor at St. Mary’s University for 28 years, Mr. Reamey specializes in the area of criminal law and procedure. He serves on the National Alumni Board at Trinity and also served on the 2009 Greek Advisory Committee. Born in Hot Springs, he has called San Antonio home for more than 30 years.
In his role as Alumni Sponsor, Mr. Reamey will be the “face” of a successful Trinity graduate. He will also offer a consistent presence for students and serve as a resource regarding the San Antonio community and on issues related to life off-campus.
For the Class of 2012, Angela Breidenstein, associate professor of education, is the Class Marshal and alumnus Dave Mansen ’76 is the Alumni Sponsor. Serving the Class of 2013 are Harry Wallace, associate professor of psychology, and Mary Ullmann Japhet ’84.
